This evening is a great opportunity to catch up with colleagues and friends as we welcome you to the 2018 National Family Law Conference. Held at the spectacular Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in the heart of Brisbane’s South Bank cultural precinct, GOMA is a vibrant and engaging space designed to connect people and art. The Gallery is a short 5-8 minute walk from the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre and the Welcome Reception will feature live entertainment, canapés and refreshments.

At the conclusion of sessions on Wednesday we encourage you to return to the Exhibition for Happy Hour. Refreshments will be served as you discuss the hot topics of the day.

Restaurant Dine Around

Great food and wine are all part of the Brisbane dining experience. A unique selection of restaurants has been chosen highlighting some of the top venues in Brisbane. If you enjoy tasting a bit of everything through a degustation menu, or like to share a more informal meal with friends and colleagues, there’s something on offer for everyone.

Choose your preferred restaurant and gather a few friends together or simply come along on your own and join fellow delegates for what promises to be an amazing night. Seating at each venue is limited so we encourage you to book early. Full payment is required in advance to secure your place. Seating at the restaurants will either be in the main restaurant or private areas – subject to final numbers. You can simply make your own way to and from the restaurant of your choice.

The heritage listed Moreton Rubber Works building (circa 1889) is located in the antique quarter of Woolloongabba. Only minutes from the CBD, nestled amongst the antique shops & restaurants that line this little pocket, the building oozes a character which is rare to find in Brisbane. A perfect fit for 1889 Enotecca. Modelled in the style of a classic enoteche in Italy, it incorporates a restaurant, wine bar, basement level cellar for private dining and small wine store. The restaurant serves modern Roman cuisine that is made to be enjoyed with the wine from their extensive wine list.

For this traditional 4 course la famiglia a tavola (family style), dishes are plated to share and placed in the middle of the table creating a warm, convivial, feasting atmosphere.

Urbane Restaurant is an icon in the Brisbane dining scene with numerous awards and a substantial reputation. From the outside you will see a screen of bronze expanded mesh designed to give privacy during dining with sneaky glimpses of what lies beyond. Come inside to experience the fine dining degustation menu and exceptional service. The menu at Urbane cannot be labelled by a country or style. They use techniques they like the most, whether modern or traditional, French or Japanese and with products well known in Australia and some not so well known. Mostly seasonal produce made or grown in Australia, preferably in Queensland, is used focusing on the best products they can source. At Urbane, food should be enjoyable and easy. They want you to experience new products and techniques so you can take something away after dining at Urbane, whether it be a new taste sensation or just a happy memory of a superb meal.


thursday 4 october 2018 - the CHAIR'S LUNCH & happy hour

Join us for a 2 course lunch and a lively discussion between Amanda Vanstone, former Family and Community Services Minister and Minister for Justice among other roles in the Howard Government, now Fairfax newspaper columnist and Radio National presenter, and Annabel Crabb, political journalist, author and ABC TV presenter.

On the topic “The politics of families and family law”, Amanda and Annabel will share their first-hand experience of the Australian political process and the practicalities of how policy is made and implemented at a federal level. With the recent debate on same sex marriage and current issues regarding court restructure, family violence and the family law review, our guests will give us their behind the scenes commentary and insights on the political difficulties in reaching consensus on family law policy.

A two course lunch and beverages will be served. Bookings are essential and can be made when registering online for the Conference. 

Guests from the wider legal profession who are not participating in the Conference are also welcome to join the lunch and should use this booking form to secure tickets.

Tables will be set for 10 guests. You may book individual tickets or for smaller groups of colleagues or a complete table of 10 guests. Individuals or smaller groups will be allocated and joined by other guests at their table.

Good Morning Brisbane! Kick start your Friday as you wake up your body and mind enjoying Brisbane’s picturesque South Bank. As the city comes to life, for those who run, jog or walk join us to discover the guided pathways around the precinct. And for those looking for a mindful approach – yoga in the park is a perfect way to start the day. You’ll then have the chance to enjoy a light breakfast in South Bank before returning to your hotels at 0830 to be ready for sessions at 0900.

ACTIVITIES (0700-0800)

Running Session

Take in the sights of Brisbane while you participate in this guided run through Southbank and along the river. Options are available for all fitness levels, with either a 5km run or 3km walk. Finish the activity with stretches, tips, water juice and fruit before you head on to your selected cafe for breakfast.

The Wheel of Brisbane

Participate in one of Brisbane’s iconic activities with an air conditioned, fully enclosed gondola ride on The Wheel of Brisbane. Rising 60 metres above the ground, this is a breathtaking way to take in 360 degree panoramic views of Brisbane city.

Yoga in the Park

Start the day off with a relaxing, 60 minute yoga session in the park that includes breathing exercises, warm up, movement and stretches.

This cafe is perfectly located for those participating in the Running Session or The Wheel of Brisbane activity. Enjoy a coffee, tea, hot chocolate, milkshake, iced tea, iced latte, soft drink or sparkling water along with a brownie, banana bread or any of their range of jaffles. 

Merriweather Café
27 Russell Street, South Brisbane
Best located for those participating in the yoga activity, those attending this cafe will have the option to select any of the items on the cafe’s menu along with a coffee, tea or hot chocolate. 

Olio Café (
133 Grey Street (inside BCEC), Southbank
Situated inside the Convention Centre, Olio Cafe is centrally located for all activity participants. Make your way here to select from either toasted granola with cocoa nibs, pepita seeds, fresh berries and coyo coconut yoghurt, or seasonal Queensland fruit, Queensland honey, quinoa, lime and soft herbs (both served along with coffee, tea, hot chocolate or bottled apple or orange juice). 

Gala Dinner: “BOTANICA”

Location: Plaza Ballroom, Plaza Level, Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre

Dress code: Black tie with a touch of green
Tickets: Included in Member and Non-Member and Junior Lawyer Member and Non-Member full registrations, as well as Junior Lawyers’ Day registrations. Guest tickets are $220 inc GST.
